With the end of the watch, eight bells are sounded and the sailor was relieved of their watch. Ultimately the passing of a sailor is also marked with the ringing of eight bells. The sounding of a ship's bell is a powerful reminder of the traditions rooted in this long-held maritime tradition. It is with this tradition that we are today honoring one of our members, Dave Lyon. Dave passed away on November 5, 2023. Our heartfelt wishes and prayers go out to Kristin and the Lyon family.
David Lyon, a resident of Oak Point, TX, died Sunday, 5NOV at Medical City Denton. Dave was a southern gentleman – intelligent and kind.
David was born on 23JUL, 1954 and raised in Greensboro, NC where he lived with his parents, two brothers and a sister. He attended Grimsley High School until 1972, worked a few odd jobs and took some college courses in the NC area then enlisted in the Navy and served from 1977-1981. He was stationed in several ports, one being Pascagoula (he lovingly referred to it as the armpit of the south), then moved to San Diego – which he loved. Once he left the Navy, David enrolled at Cal State Fullerton to complete his degree. David worked for a few different companies between 1981 and 1984, then he moved from Atlanta to the Dallas area to work in sales for Gandalf Data. David married Kristin Kreiner on 22JUN, 1985, bought their first home in Flower Mound, TX and lived there for 26 years. In 1993, he took sailing lessons with the American Airlines Sailing Club and fell in love with the sport. They joined Dallas Corinthian Yacht Club (DCYC) on Lewisville Lake in March of 1994, and bought their first sailboat in May of that year. David and Kristin loved traveling together and shared a lifetime of memories of the places visited.
David and Kristin moved to Oak Point in OCT 2011, when a home close to DCYC became available.
David was a loving husband, son, brother, uncle, and dog dad, one the sweetest and kindest gentleman ever known.
Preceded in death by his father, Wyle Larry Lyon (the trail mix master), his mother Ellen Mary Tucker Lyon, brother Christopher, sister Cynthia and numerous other aunts, uncles and relatives. He is survived by his wife, Kristin Lyon, brother Steve Lyon and many nieces and nephews.
